Third Timeshare Raid in Florida

In the Sunshine State, “third time’s a charm” does not apply to timeshare scams.

M & L Marketing Concepts, a timeshare sales operation center, was raided by the Orlando police last Monday. The timeshare company was allegedly a front for timeshare fraud, and is the third company to be raided by the police in one month.

Agents from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services were also involved in the investigation. The company was said to be operating at two locations along South Magnolia Avenue. According to police officials, there have been a lot of timeshare scams lately because of the recession.

According to police investigators, there were about 24 people working in the company were allegedly collecting up to $80,000 each week through illegitimate timeshare sales. They also contacted troubled timeshare owners and asked for a $500-$7,000 fee for the sale of their timeshare properties; however, the company supposedly never followed through on the service upon receiving the money.

Billy Cannon from Remax offered some useful information regarding the sale and purchase of a timeshare. “First, never pay advance fees  advance fees are illegal or up-front fees to sell your home,” Cannon says. “Always pay based on sales performance.”

He suggests doing a perfunctory background check on the company you’re doing business with. One should also review the sales agreement before hiring the company’s services.
